Beside Freycinet National Park, the other must-visit place is Cradle Mountain. Because we have no interest in the mining town in the west, we decided to travel anti-clockwise along the east coast. This made the journey to Cradle Mountain longer since the mountain is situated on the north western part of Tasmania. Although the drive from St Helens to Cradle Mountain took over 4 hours, it was pleasantly smooth. We had lunch in between, and arrived at Sheffield to stock-up food from the supermarket. We know that once we are up in the mountains (which is littered with luxury resorts), the meals we get would cost us an arm or a leg.
Sheffield is a popular stop-over town en-route Cradle Mountain. Take away the tarred road and cars, one would think that it is an old cowboy town of the wild wild west.
Horses probably once stood where the cars are now.
Sheffield is also known as the Town of Murals, with over 60 murals painted on walls scattered throughout the town & buildings.
The paintings depict the town's history and scenery that draw tourists all over to visit.
All available walls are not spared, like this school....
.... and this souvenir stall.
The drive up Cradle Mountain took another hour and we arrived at Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village, where we stayed for 2 nights.
View from the lodge.
Its interior is pretty and well furnished for a comfortable stay.
One of the many residents in the premises - Pademelon.
They are so used to human that they don't shy away.
Another popular native is the friendly giant wombat. This guy seems to be doing its business in the bush.
These are wombat cube-like poops.
After relieving, its back to my other favourite past-time - eating!!
This chap is oblivious to our presence, as we took turns taking photos with it.
Like Freycinet, there are several hiking trials in Cradle Mountain. We trekked a 6km route known as the Dove Lake Circuit, which offers a beautiful view of the popular mountain, as seen in my first photo. Stay tune to my next entry!
An another travel trip awaiting....
